Job summary

An exciting opportunity to develop your career in specialist neurological care. Iris Care Group is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated Band 5 Speech and Language Therapist to join our multidisciplinary team at St Peters Hospital in Newport. St Peters Hospital provides specialist care and rehabilitation for adults with complex neurological, neuropsychiatric and degenerative conditions, including acquired brain injury. This is an excellent opportunity for a Speech and Language Therapist who wants to develop their clinical skills within a specialist setting while benefiting from regular supervision, professional support and opportunities for continued development.

We welcome applications from therapists at the beginning of their career, including newly qualified Speech and Language Therapists, as well as candidates who already have relevant post-qualification experience.

Working with the support of a Senior Speech and Language Therapist and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will manage an allocated caseload appropriate to your experience and competence.

For a Band 5 therapist, we recognise the importance of high-quality supervision and development. You will be supported through regular clinical supervision, appraisal and an individual professional development plan, helping you build confidence and extend your clinical skills safely within your level of competence.

Main duties of the job

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Undertaking Speech and Language Therapy assessments for adults with communication difficulties.
  • Developing individualised, person-centred therapy goals and treatment plans.
  • Delivering and evaluating individual and group interventions.
  • Supporting patients with speech, language, cognition and functional communication difficulties.
  • Developing practical communication strategies, communication passports and accessible resources.
  • Working closely with families, carers and the multidisciplinary team to ensure strategies are implemented consistently.
  • Monitoring progress and adapting interventions in response to clinical presentation and outcomes.
  • Maintaining accurate and professional clinical documentation.
  • Contributing to MDT discussions, care planning, clinical audit and service development.
  • Providing advice and education to staff to support the communication needs of patients.
  • Participating in regular clinical supervision, appraisal and continuing professional development.
  • Where you have received the appropriate training and have been assessed as competent, you may also contribute to eating, drinking and swallowing assessment and management, with appropriate senior supervision and within your agreed scope of practice.

About us

Experience within neurological, neuropsychiatric, mental health or rehabilitation services would be advantageous, particularly experience supporting people with acquired brain injury, dementia, Huntingtons disease or other neurodegenerative conditions. Membership of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT) and relevant professional networks or special interest groups would also be desirable.

To be successful, you will need:

  • A recognised Degree, Diploma or postgraduate qualification in Speech and Language Therapy.
  • Current registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Speech and Language Therapist.
  • Relevant clinical placement or post-qualification experience working with adults with communication needs.
  • Experience of assessing or supporting people with speech, language, communication or cognitive-communication difficulties.
  • An ability to plan and deliver person-centred assessments and interventions.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with patients, families, carers and other professionals.
  • The ability to manage an appropriate caseload, with supervision and support.
  • An understanding of professional standards, confidentiality and clinical governance.
  • A commitment to reflective practice and ongoing continuing professional development.
  • A professional, compassionate and person-centred approach.
