SEND/SEMH Tutors - Berkshire

Location: Wokingham, Berkshire
Role: SEND/SEMH Tutor
Phase: Secondary
Working Arrangement: In-person

About the Role

Quantum Scholars is seeking patient, supportive and experienced SEND/SEMH Tutors to provide personalised, one-to-one educational support to secondary-aged young people in Wokingham, Berkshire.

We receive regular referrals from the local authority for tuition and support for young people with a range of additional needs. We are therefore looking to connect with tutors who are passionate about helping learners overcome barriers to education, rebuild confidence and make meaningful academic progress.

The successful candidates will have experience supporting young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and/or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. You will be confident adapting your teaching methods to suit individual learning styles, abilities and emotional needs, creating a positive and supportive environment in which learners can thrive.

Experience supporting young people who experience anxiety, school avoidance, disengagement or challenging behaviour would be particularly beneficial. We are looking for tutors who can build trusting relationships, remain calm in difficult situations and encourage engagement through flexible, individualised approaches.

Key Responsibilities

The role may involve:

  • Delivering tailored, one-to-one tuition to secondary-aged young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.

  • Supporting learning across relevant secondary curriculum subjects, including GCSE-level content where appropriate.

  • Identifying gaps in learning and planning targeted activities to support academic progress.

  • Adapting teaching strategies, resources and session structures to meet individual needs.

  • Breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps to encourage understanding and engagement.

  • Supporting learners who may experience anxiety, low confidence, school avoidance or difficulties accessing mainstream education.

  • Responding calmly and consistently to challenging behaviour, using appropriate positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques where necessary.

  • Building positive professional relationships and establishing clear, appropriate boundaries.

  • Encouraging confidence, independence, resilience and positive learning habits.

  • Creating a calm, structured and supportive learning environment.

  • Monitoring progress and providing feedback to parents, carers and other relevant professionals where appropriate.

  • Working collaboratively with those involved in the learner's education and support.

  • Maintaining professional standards, confidentiality and safeguarding procedures.

Essential Requirements

The ideal candidates will have:

  • Experience working with secondary-aged young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.

  • Experience delivering one-to-one tuition or personalised educational support.

  • The ability to adapt teaching approaches to suit different learning needs and abilities.

  • Experience supporting learners who may be anxious, disengaged or reluctant to participate in education.

  • Experience supporting young people with challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.

  • A patient, empathetic, flexible and resilient approach.

  • Confidence building positive relationships and maintaining professional boundaries.

  • Strong communication and organisational skills.

  • Reliability and a genuine commitment to improving outcomes for young people.

  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

  • An enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references and the right to work in the UK.

Experience working within EOTAS, alternative provision or other non-mainstream educational settings would be particularly advantageous.

Quantum Scholars is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All applicants will be subject to appropriate safeguarding and safer recruitment checks.

Salary will be determined by the successful candidate's qualifications and relevant experience, and will be in accordance with the client's pay policy.
