AP English Tutor - Wokingham

Location: Wokingham, Berkshire
Subject: English
Phase: Secondary
Working Arrangement: In-person

About the Role

Quantum Scholars is seeking a patient, supportive and experienced Alternative Provision (AP) English Tutor to provide personalised, one-to-one educational support to a secondary-aged young person in Wokingham.

The successful candidate will have strong English subject knowledge and experience supporting young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) and/or Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs. You will be confident adapting your teaching approach to suit individual learning needs, helping learners overcome barriers to education, rebuild confidence and make meaningful academic progress.

Experience working with young people who have become disengaged from mainstream education, experience anxiety or school avoidance, or display challenging behaviour would be particularly beneficial. The ideal tutor will be calm, flexible and resilient, with the ability to build positive relationships and create a supportive learning environment.

This role would suit a tutor who can make English accessible and engaging for learners who may find traditional classroom settings difficult. The ability to identify gaps in learning, adapt resources and work at the young person's pace will be essential.

Key Responsibilities

The role may involve:

  • Delivering tailored, one-to-one English tuition to a secondary-aged learner within an alternative provision setting.

  • Supporting reading comprehension, spelling, grammar, punctuation, vocabulary and written expression.

  • Developing creative writing, analytical writing and communication skills.

  • Supporting GCSE English Language and/or Literature, including revision and exam preparation where appropriate.

  • Identifying gaps in knowledge and planning activities that build skills progressively.

  • Adapting teaching methods, materials and session structures to suit the learner's individual needs, abilities and interests.

  • Breaking down tasks into manageable steps to encourage understanding, engagement and independence.

  • Supporting a young person who may experience anxiety, low confidence, school avoidance or disengagement from education.

  • Responding calmly and consistently to challenging behaviour, using appropriate positive behaviour strategies and de-escalation techniques where necessary.

  • Building a trusting professional relationship while maintaining clear boundaries and expectations.

  • Encouraging confidence, motivation, resilience and positive attitudes towards learning.

  • Monitoring progress and providing feedback to parents, carers and relevant professionals where appropriate.

  • Maintaining professional standards, confidentiality and safeguarding procedures.

Essential Requirements

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong English subject knowledge at secondary level.

  • Experience working with secondary-aged young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs.

  • Experience delivering one-to-one tuition or personalised educational support.

  • An understanding of alternative provision and the barriers some young people face in accessing mainstream education.

  • The ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learning needs and abilities.

  • Experience supporting learners who may be anxious, disengaged or reluctant to participate in education.

  • Experience supporting young people with challenging behaviour would be highly desirable.

  • A calm, patient, flexible and empathetic approach.

  • Strong communication, organisational and relationship-building skills.

  • Reliability and a genuine commitment to helping young people achieve their potential.

  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

  • An enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references and the right to work in the UK.

Experience working within alternative provision, EOTAS (Education Otherwise Than at School) or other non-mainstream educational settings would be particularly advantageous.

Quantum Scholars is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. All applicants will be subject to appropriate safeguarding and safer recruitment checks.

Salary will be determined by the successful candidate's qualifications and relevant experience, and will be in accordance with the client's pay policy.
