Job summary

  • To provide and maintain a high standard of nursing care for patients, as well as providing nursing assistance to the doctors and other members of the primary healthcare team. The duties will include all tasks normally undertaken by an experienced RGN and any additional roles agreed between the nurse and the doctors as appropriate, having regard to current training.
  • The below duties and responsibilities are intended to represent current priorities and are not meant to be an exhaustive list. The post holder may from time to time be asked to undertake other reasonable duties and responsibilities. Any changes will be made in discussion with the post holder according to service needs.

Main duties of the job

  • Experienced Practice Nurse providing holistic, patient-centred care across primary care services. Delivers travel health advice covering vaccinations, medicines, safe sex, food hygiene and sun protection. Provides advice on childhood and adult immunisations and administers vaccines under Patient Group Directions (PGDs). Runs well person clinics and health promotion programmes, supporting healthier lifestyles through advice on diet, smoking, alcohol intake and exercise.

  • Maintains accurate consultation records in line with practice protocols and demonstrates awareness of safeguarding responsibilities, including referral procedures and recognition of child abuse concerns. Undertakes assessments for ear irrigation and cervical cytology, performs venepuncture, wound care, ECGs and suture removal, and assesses and treats minor injuries with referral to a GP where appropriate.
  • Able to recognise and manage anaphylaxis and perform CPR in line with current UK guidelines. Assists with minor surgery and obtains and documents informed consent. Leads on infection prevention and control, while monitoring and maintaining clinical stock and equipment, including refrigeration, sterilisers and emergency equipment. Maintains strict confidentiality and professionalism at all times.
