About this job

Location: 2-days-per-week based in Birmingham

Long Term Contact until 2029

Culture has a vital role to play in creating thriving places, supporting local economies, and bringing communities together. Birmingham's Cultural Action Areas Programme is transforming neighbourhoods through culture-led regeneration, helping to animate high streets, unlock new uses for vacant spaces, strengthen community cohesion, and improve opportunities for local people.

We are looking for an ambitious and organised Culture Officer to oversee the delivery of the Cultural Action Areas Programme, working with communities, artists, cultural organisations, businesses, and partners to ensure culture plays a central role in Birmingham's future growth and prosperity.

The Role

Working two days per week as Culture Officer (CAA), you will lead the coordination and monitoring of Birmingham's Cultural Action Areas Programme, supporting the delivery of place-based cultural activity that contributes to economic recovery, community wellbeing, and neighbourhood transformation.

You will work with a wide range of stakeholders to develop and deliver projects that reimagine high streets, activate underused buildings and public spaces, improve access to cultural and community activities, and create new opportunities for local residents to participate, volunteer, learn and succeed.

The role requires a proactive individual who can build strong partnerships, manage funding programmes, monitor impact, and ensure that investment delivers meaningful outcomes for Birmingham's communities.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate and oversee the delivery of the Cultural Action Areas Programme across Birmingham.
  • Manage cultural funding programmes, grant agreements and associated compliance requirements.
  • Assess applications, review project proposals and support the commissioning of cultural activity.
  • Work closely with artists, cultural organisations, community groups, businesses and public sector partners to develop and deliver projects.

Monitor programme performance and evaluate the social, cultural and economic impact of funded activity.

  • Prepare reports, briefings and funding returns for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Identify opportunities to secure additional investment and support partnership development.
  • Champion the role of culture in creating vibrant places, strengthening communities and supporting inclusive economic growth.

About You

You will be passionate about the power of culture to transform places and improve lives.

You will have:

  • Experience delivering cultural, creative, regeneration or community development programmes.
  • Experience managing grant-funded projects and monitoring delivery against agreed outcomes.
  • A strong understanding of place-based working and the role culture can play in economic growth, regeneration and community cohesion.
  • Excellent relationship management skills and experience working with a wide range of stakeholders and partners.
  • Strong project management, organisational and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience analysing information, monitoring performance and producing clear reports.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • An understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing Birmingham's cultural sector and local communities.

What You'll Get in Return

This is a great opportunity to contribute to Birmingham's cultural landscape while benefiting from a flexible, 2-day-per-week temporary assignment. You will also receive an hourly rate of £27.12, including holiday pay.
