Job summary

This is a fast-paced, rewarding role where you'll support consultants and clinical teams with medical typing, patient coordination and Resident Doctor rota management, while acting as a key point of contact for patients and families. You'll help keep pathways moving by producing timely clinic letters and discharge summaries, managing appointments, supporting RTT timelines and ensuring effective communication across multidisciplinary teams.

We're looking for an organised, proactive and caring individual who thrives in a busy environment and enjoys making a real difference every day. In return, you'll gain valuable NHS experience, develop specialist medical administration skills and be part of a supportive team committed to learning, inclusion and continuous improvement.

Main duties of the job

As a Medical Secretary within Healthcare of Older People (HCOP), you will provide high-quality administrative and secretarial support to consultants and multidisciplinary teams, playing a key role in ensuring safe, efficient and compassionate patient care.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include audio and copy typing of clinic letters, discharge summaries, medical reports and correspondence, ensuring these are completed accurately and within agreed turnaround times. You will support patient pathways by arranging appointments, managing consultant diaries, coordinating theatre or day-case bookings where required, and maintaining up-to-date patient information across Trust IT systems.

You will also be responsible for the day-to-day coordination and management of the Resident Doctor rota, ensuring that rota information is accurate, up to date and reflects staffing requirements. This will include reviewing and approving annual leave and study leave requests, coordinating rota changes and identifying potential gaps in staffing cover. You will liaise closely with Resident Doctors, consultants and relevant clinical teams to resolve rota queries and support the smooth running of the service.
