Job summary

An exciting opportunity is available for a Specialty Manager in the City Road Division at Moorfields Eye Hospital.

We are looking for an experienced Specialty Manager to join the team, working in the Paediatrics, Strabismus and Neuro-ophthalmology departments.

The post holder will play a vital role in the day-to-day operational management for these services within the division and line management of the administrative team.

This is an exciting time to join the team as we prepare to implement a brand new electronic patient record (EPR) system and relocate to a new centre in 2027.

The post will be a 12 month fixed term contract.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the Specialty Manager role include:

  • Operational management of outpatient, admitted and emergency pathways within the services
  • Management of a busy and dynamic administrative department
  • Management of formal HR processes
  • Contribution to service improvement, strategy and financial management.

Job responsibilities

The Specialty Manager post holder is responsible for the operational management of the Paediatrics, Strabismus and Neuro ophthalmology services within the City Road Division of the Hospital.

The post-holder will report directly to the Assistant Divisional Manager, and will be responsible for key deliverables including RTT performance, delivering activity against the annual business plan and staff management within the department within the budgeted financial envelope.

It is expected the post-holder will have strong experience in managing formal HR processes, and experience of managing NHS services at a similar level.

The post-holder will be expected to have a key leadership role in managing the two large scale changes due to take place in the organisation in 2027.

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent knowledge, skills and management experience
  • Previous operational management experience within the acute sector or similarly complex organisation.
  • Knowledge and effective management of ophthalmology pathways and targets

Desirable

  • Knowledge and experience of service improvement tools and techniques

Experience

Essential

  • Proven track record of meeting significant national targets
  • Budget management experience, including cost improvement
  • Evidence of report writing and presenting skills.
  • Experience of staff management, including setting objectives, team and individual appraisal, recruitment and disciplinary issues
  • Experience of management of formal HR processes

Desirable

  • Experience of implementing digital solutions
  • Proven track record of success in managing change.
