Software Engineer

For one of our leading public sector clients, we are searching for experienced freelance Software Engineers (SC Cleared) to support a major digital transformation programme within the UK Government. You'll join a newly formed team responsible for building and delivering a critical service that enables the secure exchange of tax information. This is a hands-on full stack engineering role focused on AWS-based development, API integration and production delivery.
Role Responsibilities:
- Design, develop and deploy secure, scalable cloud-native applications using AWS services
- Build and enhance services that enable the exchange of tax information between systems
- Develop backend services, APIs and integrations using Java and AWS technologies
- Contribute across the full software development lifecycle from design through to production deployment
- Work closely with Test Engineers to ensure high levels of quality, automation and service reliability
- Collaborate with platform, connectivity and legacy system teams to deliver integrated solutions
- Work within agile, multidisciplinary teams delivering services into Beta and Live environments
- Proven experience as a Software Engineer, Full Stack Developer or Software Developer within complex technology environments
- Strong AWS development experience across cloud-native architectures and services
- Commercial experience developing applications using Java
- Experience designing, building and integrating REST APIs and API Gateway solutions
- Front-end development experience using HTML5 and modern web technologies
- Strong understanding of software testing, automation and quality engineering principles
- Experience working within Agile delivery teams and modern engineering practices
- Experience delivering secure, high-availability production services
- Previous public sector, government or highly regulated industry experience is desirable
- Location: Leeds, Manchester or Newcastle (supplier offices can be utilised)
- Working Pattern: Hybrid working with 60% office attendance expected
- Delivery Phase: Beta/Live
- Clearance: Active SC Clearance
- Contract: Freelance / Contract
- SFIA Level: SFIA 4
