Job summary

We are seeking an experienced full-time Consultant who will work at Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital and provide senior medical cover on our 15 bed Acute inpatient service for men. There will also be opportunities to work with our rehabilitation patients on Trent Ward, for which additional payment will be provided.

This is a Fixed Term Contract for 3 months starting end of August, with the possibility of being extended to a permanent position.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician and will oversee and maintain the care of all ward inpatients as required and will also have responsibility for auditing the medical services rendered at the ward and ensuring their good quality in accordance to GMC standards of good medical practice and other relevant professional guidelines.

In this role, your expertise will be the driving force for life-changing treatment fully supported by a Specialty Doctor and first-class multidisciplinary team including qualified nurses, psychologist and occupational therapist.

Main duties of the job

Cygnet Joyce Parker Hospital is our emergency mental health hospital in Coventry. The service supports adults across three wards to move as quickly and safely as possible to the most appropriate and least restrictive environment for them.

The ethos of the service is about assessing and treating individuals in the least restrictive environment and planning for discharge in a robust and timely fashion. With a focus on stabilisation, we support individuals to manage their mental health, reinforce daily living skills and prepare for independent life back in the community.

The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician on our Male Acute ward and have overall medical responsibility of patient treatment plans, whilst liaising closely with the Multi-Disciplinary Team (Psychologists, Occupational Therapists, Registered Mental Health Nurses, Social Workers etc.)

The post holder will be expected to act as a positive role model, maintaining and demonstrating a positive attitude towards patients, their families, visitors and other staff.

Our team work closely and collaboratively with service users, their families and the referrer to provide a seamless pathway from referral to discharge. Our approach is recovery focused and supported by a comprehensive multi-disciplinary team, contributing to shorter lengths of stay.

Main duties and Responsibilities

  • Lead on the provision of high quality care to the service users admitted toBrook Ward

  • To ensure and maintain regular communications with the Site Medical Director and Hospital Manager

  • To communicate effectively through regular contact with patients, relatives, staff, directors, and any other concerned bodies; maintaining appropriate reports.

  • Attend and contribute to academic meetings and adhere to the professional standards for CPD as set out by the GMC, the Department of Health and the Royal College of Psychiatrists.

  • Contribute to the On call rota in line with the needs of the region

We are looking for someone who is...

  • Fully GMC registered & MBBS (or equivalent) qualified

  • Registered on the Specialist Register (CCT/CESR), Section 12 and AC Status in Adult or Forensic Psychiatry. Prior experience in inpatient acute, PICU or secure settings are desirable.

  • Knowledge of the Mental Health Act and Code of Practice, along with the Mental Capacity Act 2005 and Code of Capacity

  • A first-rate communicator who can interview, assess & treat patients & write clear, comprehensive medical notes

  • Committed to continued professional development

  • Able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team

  • A member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (MRCPsych) or equivalent
