Reports to: Venue Duty Manager
Contract terms: Casual Worker Agreement
Salary: £13.85 hourly rate, rising to £14.80 from April 2026
Hours: As required. Minimum 4-hour call.

Purpose of the role
Ushers are responsible for welcoming guests as they arrive, verifying and scanning tickets, and guiding patrons to their correct seats. They help maintain order in the auditorium, assist audience members with accessibility needs, and answer questions about the venue or performance. During the show, ushers monitor the house to ensure safety and handle any disturbances discreetly. They may also distribute programs, manage latecomers, and assist with emergency evacuations.
Key Responsibilities
- To act as a welcoming presence to all theatre audiences
- To scan audience tickets as they enter theatre spaces
- To confidently and clearly help seat audiences in both reserved and unreserved seating set ups
- To carry out pre-show checks, ensuring seating is safe and secure
- To monitor and report on audience behaviour
- To discreetly put a stop to any disturbances during a performance
- To manage the entry of latecomers
- To execute individual procedures for each show
- To assist in the event of an evacuation
- To make relevant announcements to theatre audiences
- To communicate with the Venue Duty Manager and Front of House Team members
- To collaborate with the bar team to keep the front of house areas (including toilets) clean and presentable
- To clear the theatre spaces of any rubbish after performances
- To assist patrons with access needs
- To usher both shows and events where required
- To answer general enquiries and recommend upcoming shows/events when appropriate
- To occasionally help with the set up/pack down of events using best manual handling practices
- To carry out any other tasks as reasonably requested
Person Specification
Essential:
- Commitment to high levels of customer service
- Good communicator, able to offer a consistently high standard of customer care
- Enthusiastic team worker with excellent interpersonal skills
- Ability to use your initiative and prioritise tasks
- Ability to work well under pressure
- Basic knowledge of health and safety issues
- Excellent verbal communication skills
- The ability to work evenings and weekends
- Friendly & warm personality
- Keen interest in Theatre
Desirable:
- Experience of working in theatre
- Fire Marshall trained
- Experience of working with Box Office Systems (Spektrix)

Basic Terms & Conditions
Place of work will primarily be Brixton House, 385 Coldharbour Lane, Brixton, London SW9 8GL. The standard working days are Monday to Sunday, including out of social hours shifts.
