Job summary
Consultant Upper GI Surgeon
Division: Surgery and Anaesthetics
Care Group: Surgical Services
Salary: £113,565 - £150,569 Per annum/pro rata
Interview Date: TBC
The new appointment would perform these benign upper GI procedures listed together with the already employed UGI surgeon. Both UGI surgeons will cover any patients in the hospital following UGI procedures. They will be contactable at weekends for discussion about this. As a cohort of general surgeons we will look after these patients as per the on call rota.
Main duties of the job
This job plan is a 10 PA job plan for an average of 8.5 PAs for DCC (including 1 PA per week for on-call) and 1.5 PAs for SPA. There is the possibility of additional PAs (e.g. Leadership roles) being available but this is by mutual agreement with the successful applicant and will be discussed at the job planning meeting that will take place within three months of commencement.
Week 3 includes a 24 hour on call
Week 6 includes Friday evening 5pm until 8am Saturday on call
Week 12 will include on call 8am Saturday - 5pm Monday
Departmental Mortality and Morbidity/ Clinical Governance Meetings will take place on variable days once a month for half a day in place of the days usual activity.

A formal Job Plan will be agreed between the appointee, Service Manager and their lead Clinician, on behalf of the Medical Director, within three months after the commencement date of the appointee. The job plan will be reviewed within twelve months. This will be signed by the Clinical Director and will be effective from the commencement date of the appointment. The Job Plan for the first three months will be agreed between the appointee and the Directorate. The Job Plan will then be reviewed annually, following the Appraisal Meeting. The Job Plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out a consultants duties, responsibilities and objectives for the coming year. It should cover all aspects of a consultants professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities. It should provide a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it should include personal objectives, and details of the support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.
We currently have one Upper GI surgeon employed at Medway Foundation Trust who undertakes the emergency on call, endoscopy and day case lists which include mainly laparoscopic cholecystectomy and laparoscopic hernia repair. He is trained to undertake benign upper GI procedures including hiatus hernia repairs, anti-reflux surgery and dysmotility procedures.
