Job summary

The Lake District National Park is for good reason the most visited national park in England. Its spectacular natural beauty combines dramatic mountains, peaceful lakes, rolling valleys and picturesque villages. Visitors are drawn to its stunning landscapes which provide opportunities for walking, cycling, boating, open water swimming, golf and wildlife watching. The area contains more Michelin starred restaurants than anywhere in the UK outside of London and it has a rich cultural heritage, having inspired famous writers and poets such as William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter. Its blend of outdoor adventure, tranquillity and traditional Cumbrian charm makes the Lakes a unique place where people can escape busy modern life and enjoy some of England's best hospitality and most breathtaking scenery. But why holiday here when you could live and work here?

This is a new upper limb post at the University Hospitals Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust to help meet the increasing demands for upper limb services, especially hand surgery. It represents a wonderful opportunity to take up a substantive consultant post in a friendly and well-equipped Trust in a stunning part of the world. WGH has been granted Surgical Hub status and is the main elective centre with 5 newly refurbished and spacious theatre suites.

The post holder will be expected to complement the upper limb orthopaedic services offered by the Trust and provide the highest quality care to the local population.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will join our Trauma and Orthopaedic Team working at our Hospitals working from Furness General Hospital (base) and Westmoreland General Hospital.

You will undertake 10 PAs including 1.5 SPA (with opportunity to add 2 clinical PAs by mutual agreement).

On-calls will be at Furness General Hospital (FGH), a level-two trauma centre, a 1 in 10 non-resident basis covering general on call for Trauma & Orthopaedics.

The post holder will be expected to complement the upper limb orthopaedic services offered by the Trust and provide the highest quality care to the local population. This should include all aspects of elective upper limb surgery (with emphasis on hand surgery) and the surgical management of all upper limb trauma and fractures. Submission and scrutiny of the last 12 months' surgical log book of prospective candidates would be an integral part of shortlisting and interview process.
