The ability to build a positive professional relationship, establish trust and create a calm, consistent learning environment will be key to helping the young person engage with education and make progress.

This role would suit a flexible and resilient tutor who understands the challenges some young people face in accessing education and can deliver structured, engaging sessions while responding sensitively to individual needs.

Key Responsibilities

The role may involve:

  • Delivering 6-10 hours of tailored, one-to-one English and Maths tuition per week.

  • Developing English skills, including reading comprehension, spelling, grammar, punctuation, creative writing and written communication.

  • Teaching core Maths topics, including number, calculations, fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra and problem-solving.

  • Identifying gaps in learning and planning targeted activities to address areas of difficulty.

  • Adapting teaching methods, resources and session structures to suit the learner's individual needs and interests.

  • Breaking down challenging concepts into manageable steps to build understanding and confidence.

  • Supporting the young person with any emotional or behavioural barriers that may affect their engagement with learning.

  • Using appropriate strategies to encourage participation, motivation and positive learning habits.

  • Building a trusting professional relationship while maintaining clear boundaries and expectations.

  • Monitoring progress and providing feedback to parents/carers and other relevant professionals where appropriate.

  • Maintaining professional standards, confidentiality and safeguarding procedures.

Essential Requirements

The ideal candidate must have:

  • Strong subject knowledge in both English and Maths at secondary level.

  • Essential experience supporting young people with SEMH needs.

  • Experience delivering one-to-one tuition or personalised educational support.

  • Confidence teaching Year 10 learners and supporting GCSE-level content.

  • The ability to adapt teaching approaches to meet individual academic, emotional and behavioural needs.

  • A calm, patient, empathetic and resilient approach.

  • Strong relationship-building and communication skills.

  • The ability to motivate learners who may have experienced difficulties engaging with education.

  • Flexibility and availability to deliver 6-10 hours of tuition across Tuesdays and Thursdays.

  • Reliability and a genuine commitment to helping young people achieve their potential.

  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.

  • An enhanced DBS check, satisfactory references and the right to work in the UK.

Experience within EOTAS, alternative provision or other non-mainstream educational settings would be particularly advantageous.
