Job summary

Fixed Term - 9 months

The post holder will provide safe, timely and compassionate care for adults with cancer, working within the Clinical Oncology team under appropriate consultant supervision. The role will support assessment, investigation, treatment and ongoing management across outpatient, inpatient and acute settings, including radiotherapy, systemic anti-cancer therapy and supportive care appropriate to the post holder's competence and authorised scope of practice. The post is deliberately generic and may support one or more tumour-site teams according to service need. Duties, supervision and clinical autonomy will be matched to the post holder's training, previous experience and demonstrated competencies.

Main duties of the job

Assess and manage patients in outpatient clinics, inpatient areas and acute oncology settings within agreed competence and supervision arrangements.

Take appropriate clinical histories, undertake examinations, review investigation results, formulate differential diagnoses and agree management plans with senior clinicians.

Support delivery of radiotherapy pathways, including patient assessment, consent where appropriately trained and authorised, treatment planning, contouring, prescription preparation, verification, on-treatment review and management of treatment-related toxicity.

Support systemic anti-cancer therapy pathways, including assessment of treatment fitness, review of blood results, prescribing or authorising treatment only where appropriately trained, credentialed and working within local governance arrangements, and management of treatment-related toxicity.

Recognise, assess and initiate management of oncological emergencies, including neutropenic sepsis, metastatic spinal cord compression, hypercalcaemia, superior vena cava obstruction and complications of radiotherapy or systemic treatment, escalating promptly when required.

Contribute to safe inpatient care, ward rounds, discharge planning, treatment escalation decisions and liaison with palliative care and other specialties.

Participate in relevant multidisciplinary team meetings and provide clear clinical information to support treatment decision-making.
