Job summary

We are seeking a pelvic floor trained nurse with experience in bladder and bowel dysfunction, ideally from a background in urogynaecology, urology, IBS CNS or colorectal nursing. We also welcome applications from pelvic health physiotherapists.

This post is to provide maternity leave cover and offers an excellent opportunity for a secondment, allowing you to gain experience in the management of benign pelvic floor disorders within the national bowel hospital a highly specialised skill set that is both rare and valuable for career development.

As a member of our multidisciplinary pelvic floor unit, you will play a key role in supporting and improving the quality of life of patients referred for assessment, investigation, conservative management and surgical treatment of benign functional pelvic floor disorders.

Role Overview

The post holder will work closely with the Lead Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physiotherapists and the wider MDT to deliver specialist conservative management for patients with:

  • Bowel incontinence
  • Rectal evacuatory disorders
  • Benign colorectal and urogynaecological conditions including urinary incontinence, haemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal fistulae, rectocele, rectal prolapse and rectal intussusception

Main duties of the job

Role Overview

The post holder will work closely with the Lead Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialists, Physiotherapists and the wider MDT to deliver specialist conservative management for patients with:

  • Bowel incontinence
  • Rectal evacuatory disorders
  • Benign colorectal and urogynaecological conditions including urinary incontinence, haemorrhoids, anal fissure, anal fistulae, rectocele, rectal prolapse and rectal intussusception

This will include attendance at outpatient clinics, provision of patient information, specialist pre- and post-operative inpatient care, teaching and guidance for ward teams, and ongoing support following discharge.

You will also develop, implement and evaluate individualised conservative management programmes, including visual biofeedback, for patients with faecal and urogynaecological dysfunction. The role includes delivering nurse/AHP-led services, developing protocols and guidance, and producing patient information leaflets.

Key Responsibilities

Caring for patients with functional bowel and pelvic floor disorders:

  • Advanced clinical assessment and history taking
  • Non-medical prescribing (desirable)
  • Liaison with community Bladder and Bowel Teams and development of care plans
  • Ward-based and in-house teaching
  • Production of unit leaflets on pelvic floor disorders (e.g., constipation, faecal incontinence, rectal prolapse)
  • Rehabilitation and ongoing management of post-operative patients
