Job summary

We are looking for Registered Nurses who have a passion and commitment to providing individualised patient centred care to patients with a life limiting illness and to provide care and support for relatives and carers on the Inpatient Unit and in Patients' homes.

Main duties of the job

To provide a high standard of individualised patient centred care to patients with a life limiting illness and to provide care and support for relatives and carers on the Inpatient Unit and in Patients homes.

To assist in the management and organisation of the nursing service including the teaching of junior staff and students.

We are Garden House Hospice Care, the Hospice for North Hertfordshire. We are a multi award-winning hospice that puts the patient at the heart of everything we do. Patients on our inpatient unit are looked after by our specialist team 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

We provide support and care to patients with a wide range of symptoms associated with a life-limiting illness, as well as their families.

We support our patients by providing symptom control, psychological support and end of life care. Our high nurse-to-patient ratio ensures that patients are able to get the dedicated support that they might need.

  • Provide knowledge and skills in caring for patients with life limiting illness/ advancing illness
  • Work in partnership with the patient, family and Primary Health Care Team so the plan is understood and acceptable to both the patient and family.
  • Develop and maintain effective relationships with all members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure collaborative working for the benefit of patient care.
  • Provide a high standard of personalised and on-going after care for bereaved families and friends
  • Provide mentorship and preceptorship to new starters, newly qualified staff and students and to encourage an effective learning environment.
  • Supervise and co-ordinate the running of the Inpatient Unit/ Hospice at Home service, in the absence of senior staff

This role is for 36 to 37.5 hours a week.

A full UK driving licence and a car with insurance cover for business use is essential for this role.

  • Ability to balance conflicting priorities and manage a challenging workload in a calm and professional manner
  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to manage demanding and sensitive situations.

  • Advanced IT skills
  • Evidence of introducing change and innovation into nursing practice.
  • Day to Day Team Management, including taking charge of shifts when required

  • Current NMC Registration
  • RN educated to Diploma or Degree level
  • Evidence of updated professional development

  • Palliative care qualification
  • Mentorship qualification/ Practice Assessor and Practice Supervisor

  • Relevant clinical experience, including working in the community
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience working both as part of a team and self-directed
