Quantum Scholars are looking for a patient, supportive and experienced SEND/SEMH English Tutor to provide personalised one-to-one English tuition to a young person in Somerset. This is an in-person tutoring role and is not online work.

The successful tutor will have experience supporting young people with SEND and/or SEMH needs and will be confident adapting their teaching style, pace and resources to meet individual learning needs. The role will involve building a positive and trusting relationship with the student and creating a calm, structured and supportive learning environment.

Alongside supporting academic progress in English, the tutor will play an important role in developing the student's confidence, motivation, engagement and independence, helping them to overcome barriers to learning and re-engage with education.

The role may involve:
  • Providing one-to-one English tuition tailored to the student's individual SEND/SEMH needs.
  • Supporting the student across relevant areas of the Secondary English curriculum.
  • Developing skills in reading, writing, comprehension, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and communication.
  • Supporting GCSE English preparation where appropriate.
  • Planning and delivering engaging, accessible and appropriately challenging lessons.
  • Adapting teaching methods, resources and pace to suit the student's individual needs and abilities.
  • Identifying gaps in knowledge and providing targeted support to address them.
  • Breaking down tasks and concepts into manageable steps.
  • Encouraging confidence and a positive attitude towards English and learning.
  • Supporting students who may experience anxiety, school avoidance, emotional dysregulation or other barriers to education.
  • Helping the student re-engage with learning and develop greater independence.
  • Using the student's interests and strengths to make lessons relevant and engaging.
  • Supporting organisation, study skills and preparation for assessments where appropriate.
  • Monitoring progress and providing constructive feedback.
  • Building a consistent, positive and trusting relationship with the student.
  • Working collaboratively with parents/carers and other professionals involved in the student's education.
  • Following safeguarding procedures and maintaining professional boundaries at all times.
Essential requirements:
  • Experience teaching or tutoring English to children or young people.
  • A good understanding of the English curriculum.
  • Experience working with SEND and/or SEMH students.
  • Experience delivering one-to-one or personalised educational support is desirable.
  • Ability to adapt teaching and communication styles to meet individual learning needs.
  • A patient, calm, flexible and empathetic approach.
  • Confidence supporting young people who may be reluctant, anxious or disengaged from education.
  • Strong communication, organisation and relationship-building skills.
  • Ability to build trust and motivate students who have experienced barriers within a traditional school environment.
  • A genuine commitment to supporting both the academic and personal development of young people.
  • Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people.
  • Enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.
  • The right to work in the UK.
