To undertake repair and maintenance to a wide range of medical equipment at a high technical level under the care of Medical Engineering Services and to support the work of the Service by undertaking duties at Client sites across Lancashire, and at any other locations as required.

To perform maintenance on a wide range of equipment with specific formal training and knowledge requirements.

Please be aware that with this role you may require a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS), further information will be provided if you are successful for interview.

Main duties of the job

  • Perform repairs, calibration verification and safety testing on a wide range of medical equipment including highly complex and highly technical specialist equipment.

  • Perform planned maintenance on a wide range of medical equipment including highly technical, highly complex equipment.

  • Commission, undertake performance and safety tests and install new equipment recording inventory data for inclusion on the medical equipment management database/information system

  • Use a wide range of highly technical, highly complex, medical, electronic and mechanical test, calibration and simulation equipment and tools.

  • Measure, analyse and record test data and take corrective action for equipment falling outside stated performance criteria.

  • Consult manufacturers and internally produced documentation to extract information to allow servicing to be undertaken.

  • Communicate information to patients, clinical staff, customers and external engineers and suppliers. Support and mentor junior staff in Medical Engineering. Provide technical support to clinical staff.

  • Operate to department quality system including document control, stores system and stock control

  • Regular communications with medical, nursing, technical, managerial staff as well as patients in their homes, providing information which can be specialist and highly complex in nature and sometimes in stressful situations during procedures on patients.

  • Effectively explain highly complex technical issues to nursing and medical staff where training, persuasive, empathic or reassurance skills are required.

  • Effectively explain safety issues to patients within the hospital, other clinical settings and their homes.

  • Train other technicians in a range of techniques and methods used in the Medical Engineering Department using training and motivational skills Communicate with external suppliers on any performance issues using negotiating and persuasive skills.

  • Communicates with Medical Engineering companies and regulatory bodies in relation to medical device performance, failure and incidents passing sensitive, highly technical and highly complex information. Responsible for logging calls for service and recording accurate information, judging urgency of requests and responding as necessary.

  • Responsible for monitoring and supervising the work of junior staff.

  • Responsible for operating highly technical, highly complex and expensive medical and test equipment during maintenance, repair, testing and calibration of medical equipment.

  • Responsible to ensure that medical equipment is fit for purpose and safe to use.

  • To implement action on safety action and hazard notices as delegated by the Team Leader/Chief Medical Engineer.

  • Communicate with other professional and technical departments to compare professional standards (benchmarking)

  • HNC / HND in Electrical / Electronic Engineering or other appropriate discipline. (Applied Physics, Mechatronics, Physiological Measurement) Plus, relevant post graduate training or significant equivalent experience
  • Full Clean UK Driver's License.

  • An Incorporated Member of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IIPEM)
  • Registered Clinical Technologist (RCT) on the
