Designated Teacher for Children Looked After and Care Leavers

Full Time | 35 Hours per Week

Salary: £32,931 - £34,000 FTE per annum

Location: Openshaw Campus / Harpurhey Campus

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Student Experience and Support Department as a Designated Teacher for Children Looked After and Care Leavers on a fixed-term, full-time basis.

As an experienced and qualified teacher, you will fulfil the role of Designated Teacher for all children and young people who are looked after, including previously looked after young people and care leavers.

You will take lead responsibility for promoting educational attainment, progress, achievement, attendance, engagement, and positive outcomes for this cohort of learners. This includes coordinating and completing Post-16 Personal Education Plans (PEPs), ensuring robust and effective PEPs are completed each term and are focused on academic achievement, personal development, and enrichment opportunities.

The role will be carried out in line with statutory guidance, Keeping Children Safe in Education, and the responsibilities associated with the Designated Teacher role.

• Act as the Designated Teacher for Children Looked After, Previously Looked After Children, and Care Leavers across the college.
• Lead on the planning, monitoring, and review of educational progress and achievement for learners within the cohort.
• Coordinate, complete, and review Post-16 Personal Education Plans (PEPs) on a termly basis.
• Ensure all PEP documentation is accurate, compliant, and focused on academic progress and personal development.
• Develop effective working relationships with local authorities, social workers, carers, virtual schools, and external agencies.
• Advocate for learners and ensure appropriate support, interventions, and enrichment opportunities are in place.
• Monitor learner attendance, achievement, retention, and progression, implementing strategies to improve outcomes where required.
• Maintain accurate learner records and provide reports on engagement, achievement, and support activity.
• Work collaboratively with curriculum teams, safeguarding staff, SEND teams, and student support services.
• Promote a culture of inclusion, wellbeing, and high aspiration for all children looked after and care leavers.

• Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an equivalent teaching qualification.
• Experience working with vulnerable learners, children looked after, care leavers, or young people requiring additional support.
• Strong understanding of safeguarding practices and statutory guidance.
• Experience of multi-agency working and partnership development.
• Excellent communication, organisation, and record-keeping skills.
