Job summary
The Specialty of Ophthalmology is currently part of Group 4b - Ophthalmology, Dermatology, Plastic Surgery and Outpatients.
he Ophthalmology Department is a sub-regional unit. There are ten consultants based at the Luton and Dunstable, one visiting consultant from Milton Keynes Hospital, four Trust Doctors and one post-CCT Corneal Fellow. There are 2 WTE Surgical Trainees from the East of England Training Programme and one FY2 trainee. There are five nurse practitioners supporting the clinical work, trained to see new and review patients working to specific protocols.
Main duties of the job
Duties & responsibilities of the post
Maintain the highest clinical standards in the Ophthalmology management of all patients.
Actively participate in both departmental and Trust matters concerning Clinical Governance and audit. Regular contribution to departmental meetings, Journal club and Medical Grand rounds of the hospital.
Have responsibility for and actively participate in continuing professional development (CPD) appraisal and revalidation.
Work under supervision and be responsible to their respective consultant, or the on call consultant and, ultimately the Clinical Director for Ophthalmology.
Attend outpatient clinics, both general and specialist, with their supervising Consultants.
Other ad hoc attendances at clinics, theatre etc. with other Consultants as required in the absence of regular junior members of staff.
Assess and manage where appropriate patients with a range of eye conditions across the Ophthalmology sub-specialties including glaucoma, medical retina, corneal, paediatrics, cataracts and patients presenting with acute eye concerns. The post holder will work closely with the Paediatric Ophthalmology Service. In particular, training will be provided to ensure that the post holder will be able to provide cross cover for the ROP screening service and gain skills in delivering treatment for this condition i.e. IVT & diode retinal laser
