About the Opportunity

Advanced TRS is partnering with a leading consultancy to appoint an experienced Design Manager to support the delivery of a major electricity transmission programme.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing consultancy working on high-profile UK energy infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will take responsibility for coordinating, managing and assuring design activities across a portfolio of projects.

You will work closely with Project Managers, Designers, Planning, Commercial and Construction teams to ensure design activities are delivered safely, efficiently, on programme and to the required quality standards.

The Role

As Design Manager, you will provide design leadership and coordination across multiple schemes, ensuring clear interfaces between design, planning, procurement and construction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop, maintain and manage design programmes across multiple projects.
  • Monitor design progress and implement recovery actions where required.
  • Coordinate design interfaces with planning, procurement and construction.
  • Ensure design outputs meet required client specifications and governance standards.
  • Manage design assurance submissions, hold points and gateway approvals.
  • Lead design review meetings and coordinate multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Manage RFIs, technical queries and design communications.
  • Identify and manage design risks and support CDM requirements.
  • Manage design changes and maintain relevant registers and documentation.
  • Support NEC change control, including Early Warning Notices, Compensation Events and PMIs.
  • Assess the impact of design changes on cost, programme and risk.
  • Support tender and pre-construction activities, including design methodologies, assumptions and risk assessments.
  • Promote buildability, value engineering and safety-by-design.
  • Support and mentor Assistant Design Managers.
  • Drive lessons learned, standardisation and continuous improvement.
About You

We are looking for an experienced Design Manager with a strong background in UK electricity transmission and major infrastructure.

Essential
  • 8+ years' experience in Design Management, Engineering Design or a related role.
  • Previous National Grid / NGET project experience is essential.
  • Strong understanding of National Grid standards, processes and design assurance requirements.
  • Experience across HV substations, overhead lines, cable routes or similar transmission assets.
  • Proven experience coordinating multidisciplinary design teams.
  • Experience managing design activities across multiple projects.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills across clients, consultants, contractors and delivery teams.
  • Experience working within complex, regulated infrastructure environments.
  • Strong project leadership and communication skills.
Desirable
  • Experience working with other UK transmission or distribution network operators.
  • Experience with NEC contracts, including EWN, CE and PMI.
  • Knowledge of CDM and Principal Designer requirements.
  • Degree qualified in Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management or a related discipline.
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution.
  • Experience supporting tenders and pre-construction activities.
