Job summary

Applications are invited for a substantive Consultant General Anaesthetist to join our friendly, forward-thinking and ambitious Department of Anaesthesia at the James Paget University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

The James Paget University Hospital is a modern district general hospital serving a population of approximately 250,000 across Norfolk and Suffolk, with additional seasonal demand from our coastal location. This is an exciting opportunity to join a supportive and dynamic department that provides anaesthetic services across a broad range of surgical specialties. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop a specialist interest and contribute to service development, education, quality improvement and research.

Our department continues to evolve and innovate. We have recently opened a dedicated Elective Orthopaedic Hub, expanded our elective capacity and established a robotic surgery programme. We are also actively engaged in planning for the future development of healthcare services through the national New Hospital Programme.

Main duties of the job

  • The department provides anaesthetic services to:

    • General Surgery
    • Colorectal Surgery
    • Orthopaedics and Trauma
    • Obstetrics
    • Gynaecology
    • Urology
    • ENT
    • Ophthalmology
    • Community Dental Services
    • Emergency Surgery

    Facilities include:

    • 10 operating theatres
    • Dedicated Day Surgery Unit with 3 theatres
    • Separate maternity theatre and recovery facilities
    • Integrated 12-bedded ICU/HDU
    • Dedicated Elective Orthopaedic Hub with 2 operating theatres, 4 recovery bays and 8 day-care pods
    • Established robotic surgery service
    • Active regional anaesthesia, peri-operative medicine and quality improvement programmes

    The successful candidate will join a supportive consultant body committed to delivering high-quality patient care, innovation, education and service improvement.

About us

The successful applicant will:

  • Share responsibility for the provision of general anaesthetic services across the Trust.
  • Participate in the consultant on-call rota, including obstetric anaesthesia cover.
  • Deliver anaesthesia across a wide range of surgical specialties.
  • Contribute to the teaching and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate trainees.
  • Participate in clinical governance, quality improvement, audit and patient safety initiatives.
  • Support the development and delivery of departmental services.
  • Participate in continuing professional development and revalidation activities.
  • Develop and promote interests in research, innovation and service improvement.

Essential

  • FRCA or equivalent
  • MBBS or Basic Medical Degree
  • On the UK (GMC) Specialist Register or being within 6 months of completion of UK Anaesthetic training or being on or eligible for the UK (GMC) Specialist Register at the date of interview.
  • Full GMC registration

Desirable

  • Post graduate Degree in education

Experience and Knowledge

Essential

  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required to gain UK CCT in Anaesthesia
  • Ability to provide consultant cover to Emergency anaesthesia and Obstetric anaesthesia including on call
  • Knowledge of the latest RCoA Training Curriculum and thereby ability for training and teaching anaesthetic trainees to the standard required by the RCoA. Enthusiasm to teach medical students and health care professionals
  • Interest in pre-assessment/peri-operative anaesthesia
  • Relevant experience of NHS Anaesthesia practice
  • Interest in Obstetric Anaesthesia

Desirable

  • Experience as Consultant in the UK
  • Interest in u/s guided vascular access and nerve blocks
