Brunswick Organic Nursery is a registered charity based in Bishopthorpe, York, which provides a productive and rewarding workplace environment for people with learning disabilities to grow and thrive in. We build skills and confidence, support wellbeing and develop independence through offering opportunities in different work areas. These include a contract gardening service for the local community, growing plants at the garden nursery, growing organic fruit and vegetables, crafts, woodwork, cooking, and office administration.

We are seeking flexible Relief Cover Staff to lead groups or provide one-to-one support when the usual staff member is not at work. We need cover in our Garden Services team and other work areas such Horticulture, Crafts, Cooking, our Shop and Community and Events. Your knowledge and/or practical experience will be at a level where you can lead and support others with the tasks. For instance, our horticulture staff tend to have horticulture qualifications or have worked in a horticulture setting. We’re looking for people who already have knowledge and experience in at least one of these work areas:

  • Garden Services in the York area – garden maintenance (ability to drive a pick-up truck is essential).
  • Plant production – growing from seed and plugs, propagation and plant care.
  • Land crops – growing organic vegetable and fruit crops.
  • Community and events administration – drafting our newsletter and organising events.
  • Cooking – creating delicious vegetarian lunches during the week for our teams.
  • Shop – serving and selling to our fab customers!
  • One-to-one support – enabling and empowering with a commitment to building genuine relationships.
  • Crafts – weaving, jewellery, dried flower crafts, card-making – we make all sorts!

Our ideal candidates will be excellent at building relationships and empowering others. You will have experience of supporting people with a range of different skills and abilities.

Relief cover schedules are planned well ahead as most cover is for pre-booked dates such as holidays or staff training. A smaller amount of cover will be at short notice, such as for sickness.

Most of our Relief Cover Staff work on a variable hours basis as our cover needs can vary week by week. Over a year we expect an average of 2-3 day’s work per week depending upon the number of areas you can work in and your availability.

Hours are variable but most take place between 8.30am – 4.30pm, Monday – Friday. There will also be weekend cover hours available in our shop.
