Job summary

This post is for a whole-time Resident Consultant in Obstetrics & Gynaecology.

This post is designed to improve the Obstetrics and Gynaecology Service in St Helens & Knowsley, and to share the general workload with the other Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.

The successful candidate will join a team of 19 Consultants within the directorate who currently provide services for General Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Feto-maternal Medicine, Urogynaecology, Menstrual disorders, Menopause, Subfertility, Outpatient hysteroscopy, and Gynaecological Oncology.

Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists (UK or equivalent qualifications), to be fully registered with the General Medical Council, and to be on the Specialist Register or due to obtain their CCT within six months of the date of interview. CESR candidates must have written GMC confirmation of successful application.

Interviews will take place on Tuesday 3rd November 2026.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will join a team of 19 Consultants within the directorate who currently provide services for General Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Feto-maternal Medicine, Urogynaecology, Menstrual disorders, Menopause, Subfertility, Outpatient hysteroscopy, and Gynaecological Oncology.

This is a Resident on call post to help towards maintaining full activity within gynaecology and obstetrics. The appointee will share the general workload with the other Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. The successful candidates will join a team of senior medical and midwifery/nursing staff committed to providing a high-quality service. The new consultant will join the existing Consultants and middle grade staff in delivering a high-quality 24-hour service.

The successful candidate will be expected to take clinical lead in an area of special interest which will complement those that already exist within the department as well as contribute towards 60 hours Consultant presence on the labour ward.

Specialist Regional Services

We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.
