Temporary Library & Information Assistant
Location: Ashington and Blyth Libraries
Contract: Fixed term to 31/12/2026
Are you passionate about delivering excellent customer service and supporting your local community? We are seeking a friendly and enthusiastic Library & Information Assistant to join our library team on a temporary basis.
About the Role
As the first point of contact for library customers, you will help deliver a welcoming, efficient and high-quality service. You'll support day-to-day library operations, assist customers with library resources and digital services, and help promote library activities and events.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide excellent customer service in person, by telephone and email
- Support customers to access library resources and self-service technology
- Assist with basic IT and internet enquiries
- Help organise and deliver library events and activities
- Maintain library stock and displays
- Undertake administrative duties, data recording and cash handling
- Promote library services and signpost customers to relevant information and community services
About You
You will have:
- A good standard of education, literacy and numeracy
- Previous experience in a customer-focused environment (paid or voluntary)
- Strong communication and customer care skills
- Good IT skills, including Microsoft 365 and email
- An enthusiasm for books, reading and helping people
- The ability to work flexibly as part of a team and occasionally work alone
What We're Looking For
We are looking for someone who is approachable, reliable and passionate about supporting residents and visitors of all ages. Knowledge of library services would be advantageous but is not essential.
Job Details
Ashington Library - 17 hours per week
Week 1
Monday 12-3, Wednesday 1-6, Friday 9-1.30, Saturday 9-1.30: total 17 hrs
Week 2
Monday 12-3, Tuesday 9-1.30, Thursday 1-6, Friday 9-1.30: total 17 hrs
Blyth Library - 28 hours per week, over a 2-week rota
Week 1
Monday 9-5.30, Tuesday 9-5, Wednesday 9-5: total 23 hrs
Week 2
Monday 9-5, Tuesday 9-5, Wednesday 9-5,Thursday 9-5, Saturday : total 33hrs
Salary:
Ashington 17 hours - £11,754
Blyth 28 hours - £19,360
